Frequently Asked Questions

We believe in transparency and patient education. Here are answers to common questions about prosthodontic care.

What is a prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional three years of postgraduate training beyond general dentistry, focusing on the restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists are experts in dental implants, crowns, bridges, veneers, and full mouth rehabilitation. In New Zealand, prosthodontists must be registered with the Dental Council as specialists.

Do I need a referral to see a prosthodontist?

No referral is necessary. While many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, you are welcome to contact us directly. We regularly see patients seeking specialist-level care for complex dental issues, cosmetic concerns, or those wanting a second opinion on existing treatment plans.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution for tooth replacement. With proper care and maintenance, implants can last a lifetime. The crown or prosthetic attached to the implant may need replacement after 10-15 years due to normal wear. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential for maximising the longevity of your implants.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A veneer is a thin shell of ceramic that covers the front surface of a tooth, primarily used for aesthetic improvements such as discoloration, minor chips, or slight misalignment. A crown covers the entire tooth and is used when a tooth is significantly damaged, weakened, or needs structural support. As prosthodontists, we are specialists in both procedures and can advise which is most appropriate for your situation.

What does full mouth rehabilitation involve?

Full mouth rehabilitation is a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses multiple dental problems simultaneously. It may involve a combination of crowns, bridges, veneers, implants, and other restorative procedures to rebuild your entire dentition. The process begins with a thorough assessment including digital imaging and 3D scans, followed by a personalised treatment plan staged over several appointments.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we understand that specialist dental treatment represents a significant investment. We offer various payment options and can discuss financing arrangements during your consultation. We also work with most major dental insurance providers and can help you understand your coverage.
